Artist Makes Jewelry From Barbie Parts

This Barbie jewelry is a bit creepy, but also super cool. The interesting accessories include cut-outs of the iconic doll’s mouth, eyes and body — there are even arm cuffs available made of her —well — arms.

“I think I was really focused on trying to come up with something that was totally different from what I had seen in the art jewelry world,” explained art jeweler Margaux Lange. “I fell in love with Barbie as a child. I was obsessed with Barbie dolls and playing and creating her miniature world.”

Lange has been using Barbie doll parts in her work for 20 years — she calls it the plastic body series. The pieces cost between $80 and $3,000 and Lange gets the dolls at flea markets, thrift stores, garage sales, or on eBay. She says her 6-year-old daughter helps her pick out the dolls.

She also recognizes that not everyone is a fan of her work:

“I don’t personally see it as destructive. I’m ok with people interpreting it that way,” she explained. “I’ve has a positive experience with Barbie growing up and still today. I respect the doll for what it is as just being a doll and a material. But I’m open to all interpretations.”
