A man has been charged with the murder of seven-year-old Jazmine Barnes.
20-year-old Eric Black Jr. was arrested on January 5 for cannabis possession and thanks to an anonymous tip, police linked him to the shooting death of Jazmine Barnes on December 30.
Jazmine was riding in a car with her mother and three sisters when someone in another vehicle shot into the car, hitting Jazmine in the head.
During police questioning, Black admitted to driving the car, and said a man in the passenger seat opened fire. Police say Jazmine was “possibly shot as a result of mistaken identity.”
“Mr. Black has acknowledged his role in Jazmine’s murder. And he — we also received information that this involves a second individual as well,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “We are still trying to verify some information, and this investigation in ongoing.”
Police have also identified an additional suspect but have not released a name.
The story of Jazmine’s death gained national attention thanks, in part, to activist Shaun King and attorney Lee Merritt. The attention on social media helped garner tips that led to Black’s arrest. Celebs like DeAndre Hopkins and Shaquille O’Neal have also donated thousands of dollars to cover the costs of Jazmine’s funeral.
