Hundreds of students in Baltimore walked out of class to protest gun violence in school. They also staged a 17-minute lie-in at city hall — one minute for each Parkland victim. The students marched from schools across the city chanting “Grades up! Guns Down!” The students circulated a list of demands that included a ban on lethal weapons on school property, gun safety drills in school, increased regulation of school security officers, counseling to curb a culture of violence, and two proposed gun regulations in the state.
#GradesUpGunsDown is the latest protest demanding stricter gun laws following the Parkland shooting. The MarcheFor Our Lives protest is expected to bring thousands of D.C. on March 24. The student response to the recent Parkland school shooting that claimed 17 lives has been impressive and staggering. Survivors of the shooting have been brave and unyielding in their demands for gun reform so that more students don’t have to suffer the fate of their peers. Now, it seems, even students that weren’t affected are speaking out for their own safety and the safety for others. Hopefully, continued demonstrations like this, as well as the March For Life, will create meaningful policies that will protect people from more shootings.
