Shane Burcaw and Hannah Aylward Use YouTube to Erase Stigma Around Interabled Couples

This couple is showing the world love has no limits.

Shane Burcaw and Hannah Aylward met online in 2013 after Hannah saw Shane in a documentary and sent him and email. Soon they were talking over FaceTime for hours every day. They met in person for the first time in May 2016.

Burcaw lives with a disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that causes his muscles to weaken as he gets older.

As they fell in love, Hannah learned how to help Shane with his day-to-day care. As their relationship grew, they started documenting their day-to-day lives and started a YouTube channel called “Squirmy and Grubs.” They vlog about their relationship and everything they do. They hope that by sharing their story, they can help normalize interblend relationships.

“I think if people could see how boringly and horribly normal it is, that would probably be good,” they joked.
Shane used to think his life expectancy was approximately 30 years.

“A long time ago, I came to terms with that idea,” he stated. “I accepted and decided that I was gonna live as hard as I could, and love as hard as I could, no matter how weak my body got.”

But things changed when the FDA approved an SMA treatment called Spinraza. With regular injection, Shane’s disease won’t progress further.
