A massive first broke out at Notre Dame Cathedral. The spire on the 850-year-old building collapsed.
Firefighters battled the blaze as onlookers watched in disbelief. Shocking photos and videos also flooded social media on April 15 as the iconic building burned.
Officials have not yet stated the cause of the fire but have said it could be linked to renovation work. A Notre Dame spokesperson told French media, “everything is burning, nothing will remain from the frame.” However, the Paris police chief later said the cathedral structure was saved.
French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted, “Our Lady of Paris in flames. Pain of a whole nation. Thoughts for all Catholics and all French. Like all our countrymen, I am sad tonight to see this part of us burn.”
