Bonnie Kimball says she was fired after she let a student have a free meal.
The cafeteria worker says she was a lunch employee for five years at Mascoma Valley Regional High School in Canaan, New Hampshire when she reportedly fed a student who didn’t have $8 for lunch. The student’s bill was reportedly paid the next day but Kimball says a district manager fired her, saying she had committed “theft.”
Fresh Picks Café, her former employer, offered to rehire her but Kimball says she won’t accept. Celebrity chef José Andrés offered Kimball a job at his company. A GoFundMe she started raised approximately $8,000 by May 20.
36% of students in the school district receive free or reduced lunch and the superintendent said the district doesn’t refuse food to students who can’t afford to pay.
The president of Fresh Picks Café released a statement on May 20 saying the student in question had not been charged in three months, and that Kimball was “dishonest” about charging him. He said she was let go for not following procedures.
