Marshae Jones Charged with Manslaughter After Miscarriage in Alabama

A woman is being charged with manslaughter after getting into a fight that caused her to miscarry.

27-year-old Marshae Jones was arrested on June 26. She faced a manslaughter charge for the death of her unborn baby after another woman shot her in the stomach during a fight, ending her pregnancy.

Authorities said an investigation into the December 2018 incident determined Jones had initiated the dispute that led to the shooting. She was five months pregnant at the time.

“The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby…” Lieutenant Danny Reid of the Pleasant Grove Police stated. “That child is dependent on its mother to try to keep it from harm, and she shouldn’t seek out unnecessary physical altercations.”

Pro-choice groups were quick to call out Jones’ indictment as an example of the state placing undue burdens on pregnant mothers.

“The state of Alabama has proven yet again that the moment a person becomes pregnant their sole responsibility is to produce a live, healthy baby and that it considers any action a pregnant person takes that might impede in that live birth to be a criminal act,” The Yellowhammer Fund’s Executive Director Amanda Reyes stated.

Jones is currently being held on a $50,000 bail. It’s unclear how many years she will spend behind bars if convicted.
