Meet Travis Jackson: War Veteran & Alabama Abortion Clinic Escort

Army veteran Travis Jackson volunteers as an abortion clinic escort at one of the only three abortion clinics in Alabama.

“I am a war veteran and I fought for the rights of all Americans, and that includes reproductive rights,” he explained. “A man that disrespects women’s rights is a man who is insecure with themselves.”

Jackson has been a clinic volunteer for three and a half years and makes sure that women are able to visit the clinic and exercise their rights without any distractions from protesters. He said that a loved one, who is a sexual assault survivor, encouraged him to join.

Anti-choice protesters are often gathered just outside the clinic with posters conveying misinformation about abortion care.

“Sometimes they say some very grotesque things about women says that ‘you’re going to go to hell,’ telling them that ‘you don’t have the right that God has to say so,’ And it can be physical. Sometimes they’ll follow women to their cars and companions to their vehicles with their cameras facing towards them, because [anti-choice protesters do like to doxx the patient and put their business all over social media,” Jackson said.

Some clinics allow volunteers to apply online to become escorts — and Jackson encourages more males to get involved in women’s rights issues.

“We need more men on the battlefield for reproductive rights,” he said.
