The nephew of a fallen police officer was just “sworn in” to the force. Enzo Russell took the oath on his birthday, six months after his uncle, sergeant Sam Howard, was killed in the line of duty.
KPD Chief O’Dell tweeted, “This is why I love my job. Welcome aboard Officer Enzo, your Uncle Sam is smiling in Heaven!”
Howard died while helping fellow officer Matthew Baxter do a routine check into three suspicious people. Both officers were allegedly shot and killed by Everett Glenn Miller — Howard had been promoted just a month earlier.
The isn’t the first time fellow officers have done something for a relative of sergeant Howard. Police threw a surprise birthday party last August for Howard’s daughter, Unique who turned 17 years old just days after his death.
One officer stated, “From now and forever you don’t stand alone, you don’t suffer alone. Because all of these people are here for you and here to protect you. Happy birthday, Unique.”
