Former NFL player turned teacher Aaron Maybin shared videos of the horrible ceiling conditions near the Pre-K classrooms in his school. He says city crews took hours to come and repair the pipes that were exposed and leaking.
A Baltimore City Schools spokesperson blamed aging plumbing, releasing a statement saying there are no health and safety concerns. Although the pipes were repaired, Maybin calls the fix a “bandaid” and implored Baltimore’s elected officials to do more for its schools, like installing heaters. In a video released on Twitter, he asked his class what the day has been like, in which they responded “cold.”
Maybin recently helped raise more than $84k for “Operation Heat,” a GoFundMe aimed at providing heaters to classrooms and winter clothes for students.
85% of Baltimore’s school buildings were rated “very poor” of “poor” in 2012.
