Journalist Noor Tagouri’s photo was mistakenly used as the Pulse Nightclub shooter’s wife by multiple media outlets.
The journalist explained, “The woman whose name was Noor, she doesn’t wear a headscarf so oftentimes when people are like rushing in the newsroom, and they’re covering a story related to a terrorist attack, they’re going to assume that the woman who looks more Muslim — me for wearing a hijab, is the person they must be talking about, and they’re not thinking twice about the harm that it actually does.”
She went on to say, “It was kind of a breaking point for me because I have just been so fed up with the misrepresentation of Muslim women in media today anyway. It’s something that people have to deal with on a day to day basis and thing about it is, is the people who are working in newsrooms oftentimes are not asking themselves, ‘How is the way I’m telling this story going to impact the community I’m talking about?’ That’s the thing, it’s never just me, or it’s never just the person directly who’s being affected. It’s an entire community. The reason people get up in arms about this is not because I’m Noor Tagouri and that’s why people need to care, it’s because I look like them, too, and so they know what that would mean for them.”
