Surveillance Footage Reveals Parkland Deputy Stayed Outside of School During Shooting

Surveillance footage released from the Parkland shooting shows that the only armed deputy at the scene stayed outside. The footage was made public by the sheriff’s office.

Deputy Scot Peterson was alerted of at 2:22 pm — roughly a minute after the shooting spree began. Peterson stood outside while the shooting continued for four minutes, approximately 100 feet from the school building. The shooter killed 17 people during the rampage. According to USA Today,

“Peterson stood by the building for about 26 minutes. He walks out of camera range at 2:50:39 p.m. and isn’t seen in school surveillance footage again. By that time, Cruz had blended into the chaos of retreating students and walked off campus. He is next seen on surveillance cameras entering a Walmart Supercenter three-quarters of a mile from the high school at 2:50 p.m., where he bought a drink from a Subway restaurant inside the store.”

Peterson has since resigned from his position and he has yet to publically comment. President Trump, as well as NRA advocates, have been pushing to arm more school staff as a way to protect them from future shootings. But footage like this seems to suggest that having an armed individual on the premises doesn’t help.
