Planned Parenthood Building New Clinic in Alabama

Planned Parenthood is building a new facility in Alabama, despite the state passing a near-total ban on abortions. Construction of the 10,000-square-foot building in Birmingham, Alabama began in January 2019 and has not slowed even after the state passed the U.S.’ strictest abortion law.

In May 2019, Alabama signed into law the Human Life Protection Act, which bans all abortions without exception for rape or incest. Providers could face up to 99 years in prison for performing an abortion. The only exception to the law is if the mother’s life is on the line. The law is not yet in effect.

The facility will provide the full range of reproductive health care services, including abortion services, birth control, emergency contraception, and pregnancy services.

We are a doctor that Birmingham has counted on for decades, and we are committed to continuing to provide that care,” Planned Parenthood Southeast Spokesperson Barbara Ann Luttrell stated.

Abortion opponents aim to convince the Alabama Department of Public Health to deny the facility a license. They have also attempted to persuade workers to stop construction.

The new facility is expected to be completed by fall 2019, around the same time the state’s abortion law is supposed to go into effect.
