Sandy Hook Widower Bill Sherlach Reaches Out to Parkland Shooting Families

This man lost his wife in the Sandy Hook school shooting, now he wants to support and offer condolences to families in Parkland, Florida.
“They’re in a very dark place right now. It’s very difficult and it stays dark for a while and the darkness varies. It will be different factors over time. The one thing I will tell them that I learned from my ordeal is to keep their finish lines short. You need to set your finish lines where you can see them and where they’re attainable.” Bill Sherlach stated.

Sherlach’s wife, Mary was the school psychologist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. 20 children and six staff members were killed by 20-year-old Adam Lanza.

He explained, “I lost my wife. I was fortunate enough to know her for 36 years, and three days actually. I have no idea how I would cope with losing a child. And I think that’s the tough part — is snuffing out a life before it’s even, you know, anywhere near that it’s capable of being.”

Sherlach is a member of Sandy Hook Promise, which aims to prevent gun violence by recognizing signs of at-risk behavior and fighting for gun safety laws.
