Thailand Market Goes Viral for Replacing Plastic with Banana Leaf Wraps

Markets in Thailand are wrapping produce in banana leaves, instead of plastic packaging.

The photos were taken at Rimping supermarket in Chiang Mai, Thailand and posted on Facebook, where they went viral. Other supermarkets in Thailand and neighboring Vietnam have since reportedly switched to banana leaves for packaging.

If global plastic consumption continues at its current rate, there will be 12 billion tons of plastic in landfills and the environment for 2050, according to the UN. And only 9% of plastics ever made have actually been recycled. Studies show China is the biggest producer of mismanaged plastic waste.

In places where banana leaves grow abundantly, they are cheaper and more readily available than plastic. They are already used as food wraps in other places, like Mexico and Hawaii.
