At least 17 people are dead and several are injured after a 19-year-old shooter opened fire at a Florida school. The shooter is in police custody. This was the 18th school shooting this year and it’s only February. There have been 334 mass shootings in the past 12 months — and there have been no new federal gun laws since 1994.
This has become normal in America. Horrible mass shootings occur and most politicians do nothing except offer their thoughts and prayers to the affected families. Nothing is done regarding gun control and calls to action die down until the next tragedy happens.
The United States is the only country where these instances of mass gun violence occur. Citizens are becoming so desensitized to the violence because it happens so frequently. What’s more is that those are heavily in favor of their right to bear arms, that they view calls for gun control in any capacity a threat to their freedoms. Critics will argue that restricting gun access will not keep them out of the hands of criminals. But the alternative, which is doing nothing to enact policies that will keep people safe, is clearly not working either. Something needs to be done before even more innocent lives are lost.
