Today would have been Trayvon Martin’s 23rd birthday, and people are sharing heartbreaking memories of the tragedy.
@rashidrobinson tweeted “Six years ago Trayvon was fatally shot by a racist who saw his Blackness as a threat. The racist walked, and Trayvon’s family only has his memories. Injustice is not an occurrence, it is systemic and ongoing. Happy Birthday, #trayvonMartin, we won’t ever stop fighting for you.”
@RantingOwl tweeted, “I always remember that photo pf Trayvoon Martin standing in the airplane hangar, his eyes full of the future. That a crime. What a loss. Happy birthday, young man.”
@Nelba_MG tweeted, “Today is Trayvon Martin’s 23rd bday. His mom should be able to feel his arms around her neck. The pain is the same in Sanford as in Newtown. Honor his life by learning more about the work done in his memory by his family.
In February 2012, 17-year-old Trayon was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. Trayvon’s death and Zimmerman’s eventual acquittal sparked a national conversation about race, gun violence and police brutality. #Justice4TrayvonMartin grew into #BlackLivesMatter — a movement that is still fighting for justice and consequences for systematic racism. Though Marin is no longer with us, the fight to avenge his death continues.
