Why do we still need Black History Month in 2018? The NowThis staff can give a few reasons.
Tia stated, “Because people keep asking me if they can say the n-word in songs. No. You can’t.”
“Because people still don’t have their sh*t together.” Kya stated. “There is no reason why we should just learn about HIS-STORY, and HIS-STORY is white.
“Because people are still trying to touch my f*cking hair.” Bianca stated, “[And] because some people think Frederick Douglas is alive 200 years after his birth.”
Shane stated, “Because an all-Black cast is still racist, but no one ever complains about too many Sheldons and Chandlers”
Nidhi stated, “Because Black activism throughout history has helped pave the way for other minorities to have equal opportunities here in the United States.”
“So, I recently learned that Jack Daniels was made by Black people. It was a slave recipe.” Andy stated. “Now it kind of shocked me. If it was Hennessy, I would’ve understood. But the point is, it shows that Black history and Black accomplishments [have] always been minimalized or erased for one reason of another.
Branden stated, “Why do we still need Black History Month in 2018? Because people love to wear Black culture without understanding anything about it.”
