Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says it’s time to break the old rules.
“Wearing and being bright in a place that is not usually bright, wearing a red lip in a place where there aren’t too many red lips, it’s really thrilling even though it can kind of feel like you’re breaking a rule sometimes,” she explained. “There were so few other people that I felt looked like me or had lived my oath and doing what I was doing. I felt like I had to carve out a way of doing this on my own that was authentically me.”
The Bronx-born 29-year-old of Puerto Rican descent is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.
“When you’re only seeing white dudes just like running the world, you think you need to act like a white dude to run the world,” she said.
Ocasio-Cortez has been scrutinized for her clothing, but she’s also used her style to make a statement.
“The problem is that the mold wasn’t made for you. And so even if you try the hardest at being that, you will not be as good as someone who’s just that already,” she said. “I want to show other people that there are other ways of being powerful in the world.”
