Ben Carson is targeting transgender people at homeless shelters.
The Housing and Urban Planning Secretary recently stated, “Obviously [we] believe in equal rights for everybody, including the LGBT community. But we also believe in equal rights for the women in the shelters, and shelters where there are men and their equal rights. So, we want to look at things that really provide for everybody and doesn’t impede the rights for one for the sake of the other.”
When asked how protecting the rights of transgender homeless impacts others’ rights, Carson responded, “There are some women who said there were not comfortable with the idea of being in a shelter, being in a shower and somebody who has a very different anatomy.”
LGBTQ+ advocates say Carson is just plain wrong, regarding his point about homeless transgender individuals.
GLAAD Resident and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis stated, “It is because of derogatory myths like, this which have been debunked time and time again, that the transgender community faces disproportionate levels of discrimination and homelessness.”
Carson blocked Obama-era rules that would protect transgender homeless people and removed guidance to prevent discrimination at shelters. Nearly a third of respondents to the 2015 U.S. transgender survey reported facing homelessness at some point in their life and nearly 10% of respondents who stayed in shelters were thrown out after staff found out they were transgender.
