Border patrol agents dragged this woman away from her family, shoved her into a van and took her to a detention facility, while her three children looked on. Perla Morales-Luna has not yet been charged with a crime, though CBP suggested she ran a “smuggling organization” and was in the country illegally.
The footage, which was put on Facebook by Judith Castro-Rangel, shows Morales-Luna being forcefully dragged by ICE agents into a car in broad daylight in the middle of the street. Her three children can be seen on the corner, completely distraught by the sight. Some of them document the scene on their phones, while others stand paralyzed, not knowing what to do.
Mark Lane, an advocate supporting Morales-Luna, stated, “The CBP statement is…false. If Perla was actually suspected of “trafficking” police — not border patrol — would have arrested her, and she would have been brought to jail, not immigrant detention. She and her family were terrorized by CBP because she was undocumented.”
It’s unclear what will happen to Morales-Luna, though it is likely she’ll be taken to an detention facility, or deported altogether without getting to see her family. And since the Supreme Court recently ruled that immigrants can be detained for years without a bail hearing, there is a chance this will happen to her.
