From restoring millions of voters' rights to having a hand in redistricting, the midterms were a huge win for Democrats at the state level.
“I know a lot of people are upset that some marquee races did not go Democrats’ way tonight,” stated Daily Kos Communications Director Carolyn Fiddler. “There is a lot of success further down the ballot that people should be talking about, too, but we do know that Democrats have picked up at least three governing trifectas in key states, which means that Democrats have the governorship and both chambers of the legislature.”
Fiddler said progressives also had a lot of success with certain ballot measures that enhance democracy in our country. In Florida, a proposal passed that will re-enfranchise upward of 1.5 million voters who have been incarcerated in the past. Additionally, all policies that Americans care about is impacted by state legislatures.
“When things weren’t moving in Congress over the past decade, they were moving very quickly through statehouses,” she stated. “Things like restrictions or expansion for voting rights, abortion rights, environmental restrictions, states probably passed a policy on it. So these little-noticed elections are actually incredibly important.”
Fiddler sais that Democrats have finally come around to how crucial state legislative elections are to the future of the party and are finally investing in them.
