Fox News condemned one of its top hosts Jeanine Pirro for saying that representative Ilhan Omar is “anti-Israel” and that her Islam faith “is antithetical to the United States Constitution.”
Pirro openly expressed her doubts toward Omar’s loyalty to the Constitution based on her headscarf, which she claimed, on air, women do what the Quran tells them to do “so they won’t get molested.” But Omar has explained why she chooses to wear a hijab before, stating to Yahoo! News,” The best thing that I could do was to make sure that I was visually showing up as a visible Muslim, so that people can start to associate positive interactions with Muslims.”
Fox News later issued a statement, distancing themselves from Pirro’s words, stating, “We strongly condemn Jeanine Pirro’s comments about Rep. Ilhan Omar. They do not reflect those of the network and we have addressed the matter with her directly.”
Pirro went on to spread another false statement about Omar, claiming, “Her comments only critical of Jews and Israel,” when in fact, Omar has publicly criticized rights abuses by Iran and Saudi Arabia, including the Saudi war in Yemen.
Pirro has not explicitly apologized for her comments, stating she wanted “to ask a question and start a debate.”
