Tucker Carlson said immigrants make America “dirtier” and now he’s paying the price.
The Fox News host’s remarks sparked backlash from advertisers and more than two dozen sponsors dumped the show within a week.
Critics say Carlson’s point was not only offensive but wrong.
“It’s simply not true that immigration enriches a tiny number of people while making the rest poorer,” Vox’s Matthew Yglesias stated. “Quite the opposite — immigration makes most Americans at least a little bit more prosperous while also being of enormous benefit to the immigrants themselves.”
25% of high-tech companies founded between 1995 and 2005 had at least one immigrant founder.
As stated in The Business Journals, “Andy Grove, founder and former chairman and CEO of Intel, was born in Hungary. Elon Musk, founder, chairman and CEO of Tesla, was born in South Africa. Jerry Yang, co-founder of Yahoo, was born in Taiwan. Steve Jobs, founder and former chairman and CEO of Apple, was the son of Syrian immigrants…”
Carlson has since doubled down on his remarks, even causing one of his guests to call him out. Fox News has stood by their host and condemned the sponsor boycotts. Several high-profile companies stuck with his show as of Friday, including Red Lobster, Planters, ZipRecruiter, and Progressive insurance.
