Barack Obama met with climate activist Greta Thunberg the same day she received a prestigious award.
Thunberg accepted the 2019 Ambassador of Conscience Award from Amnesty International for starting Fridays for Future, a movement where students skip school on Friday to hold protests demanding action on the climate crisis.
“All these fearless youth fighting for their future—a future they should be able to take for granted, but as it looks now, they cannot,” she said. “With our business as usual, we are currently on track for a world that could displace billions of people from their homes…”
Thunberg got her start in 2018 by sitting outside Sweden’s parliament with a sign that read “School Strike for Climate.”
“So what I’m telling you to do now is to act, because no one is too small to make a difference,” she said. “And just one last thing: See you on the streets.”
