Kirsten GIllibrand Announces Family Bill of Rights in 2020 Campaign

Kirsten Gillibrand is proposing a Family Bill of Rights to protect the basic needs for all American parents.

“As I’ve traveled around the country, a lot of families are struggling, deeply,” she said.

The New York senator and 2020 candidate is pledging to roll out a Family Bill of Rights as president. Firstly, it would guarantee that you can have a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

“The maternal mortality rates in this country today are unacceptable,” she said. “Black women are four times more likely to die in childbirth.”

The bill would create a set of standards to make sure that every delivery room in America has the best practices/emergency equipment on hand.

The bill would also ensure that all parents can be parents if they want to be, meaning members of the LGBTQ+ community would be able to adopt children without discrimination from agencies.

It also promised a safe and affordable nursery and the right to early and affordable childhood education.

Finally, it promises the right to paid family leave.

“We wanna make sure that parents, when they need time, whether it’s a new baby of a sick child, that they can take that time off to meet that need of the new infant, of the sick child through leave, so they don’t actually have to choose between a paycheck and taking care of their loved one and their child when they’re needed,”  Gillibrand said.
