Alexander McCoy is an organizer with Common Defense, a grassroots organization of veterans fighting for progressive values.
“The way Donald Trump talks about us veterans — it’s not real. He doesn’t actually care about us,” he explained. “What he cares about is using us; to use us as a shield from criticism.”
McCoy served in the Marine Corps for six years and wanted to find a new purpose when he got out in 2013. This lead him to become an organizer who works with fellow veterans “who are so often used by politicians on both parties as political props and tokens.”
“When I knock on a door and the person I’m talking to maybe identifies as a conservative or a Republican or even an Independent, when I tell them that I was a Marine Corps veteran, often they’ll give me a second look,” he explained. “They’ll actually listen to what I have to say and it’s a way of breaking down some of the barriers that have emerged in our country.”
After communicating with so many Americans of different political affiliations, McCoy said that he’s found that most of them actually want the same things, but that politicians use fear and bigotry to divide them.
