Why Democrats Taking Control of the House Is a Huge Deal

It’s a huge deal that Democrats have won the House of Representatives.

A Democratic-controlled House can have a whole lot of impact on the next two years of Trump’s presidency, in two major ways.
First a Democratic-majority House can investigate the many scandals of the Trump presidency. With Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress, Trump’s power has gone largely unchecked. But Democrats have already promised a number of investigations into this administration and with a majority in the House, they now have the authority to follow through on that. Now Trump might have to answer for his tax returns, sending military troops to the border, the family separation, and, of course, the Russia investigation.

Democrats now also control the legislative agenda in the House. In addition to actual oversight, Democrats can introduce any number of bills on issues that are key to them and they plan on it. These issues include health care, immigration reform, and tax cuts. Given that Republicans still control the Senate, it’s unlikely that the House will pass much legislation that will make it to Trump’s desk that he will actually sign, but it is a major advantage for Democrats going into 2020.

And remember when the Tea Party Republicans worked to obstruct President Obama’s agenda? That’s the kind of power House Democrats now have.
