Queens District Attorney Tiffany Cabán Wants to Decriminalize Sex Work

District Attorney Tiffany Cabán has big ideas for a fairer criminal justice system.

“As a queer Latina, I am very much so aware of the fact that those that are disproportionately affected by the criminalization of sex work are trans folks of color,” she explained. “Many times, it’s because of exposure to discrimination, whether it be in area of housing, health care, or employment.”

Cabán also wants to prosecute ICE agents who abuse their power.

“You should not be allowed to hide behind your badge and do harm to other,” she said. “I have police officers in my family. I’m not anti-police officer, any good police officer will tell you that they’re pretty anti-bad cop, too.”

Cabán thinks DAs should focus more on uplifting their communities and less on law and order.

“There’s this idea that the DA’s office, they’re there to prosecute and punish, but really, in actuality, what the DA’s office should be pursuing is justice, a fair implementation of the law, and the idea that we’re here to stop harm and make our community safer,” she said. “We’re out in their communities getting to know them. We know that our clients are more than just this harm that they may have caused.”
