REI is going even further on gun safety than Walmart or Dick’s. It’s ending sales of camelbacks and other popular products, because their parent company also makes assault-style rifles and won’t take action on gun safety. In the wake of the Parkland shooting, REI put pressure on Vista outdoor to release a “clear plan of action’ to address gun violence.
Vista Outdoor owns brands like Camelbak and Giro as well as firearms manufacturer Savage Arms but Vista outdoor refused to take action.
“REI does not sell guns. We believe that it is the job of companies that manufacture and sell guns and ammunition to work towards common sense solutions that prevent the type of violence that happened in Florida last month.” REI explained in a recent statement. “Companies are showing they can contribute if they are willing to lead. We encourage Vista to do just that.”
Dick’s Walmart, and L.L. Bean will end gun sales to anyone under 21. Dick’s also publicly supported more gun regulation like a ban on assault weapons, stronger background checks and ending the gun show loophole. Other companies like Delta, Hertz, and Metlife also ended their NRA ties. Hopefully these upward momentum leads to actual gun reform in the near future.
