Syrian citizens have a day-to-day existence unlike anywhere else in the world. Due to a lengthy civil war, particularly in Eastern Ghouta, they experience routine bombings, airstrikes, attacks and chemical assaults. Areas like these can experience up to two deadly attacks a day and are also dealing with a sever lack of resources — including medicine for the injured masses. So much news regarding these attacks, warfare and immigration pass our eyes every day that it is easy to become desensitized to what is happening. But, whether we pay attention or not, lives are being forever altered constantly because of the brutality.
This is why this 2014 PSA about Syria is still relevant today. The clip shows the life of a little girl whose world becomes uprooted because of war. Though she used to live the life of a normal innocent child, bombings, raids, and displacement cause her to become hardened and morose. By the end of the montage, a year has passed since her birthday and she and her mother are without a home, hungry and downtrodden. The clip ends with the reminder “just because it isn’t happening here doesn’t mean it isn’t happening,” which begs viewers from other nations to care about those who are suffering far away, and do what they can to help.
