Trump Blames Shootings On Mental Health, Does Nothing to Fix That Either

President Trump has stated that the spree of mass shootings happening in our country are not a gun issue, but a mental health issue — but he’s not helping mental health in our country either.

The president has stated in the past, “We are committed to working with state and local leaders to help secure our schools, and tackle the difficult issues of mental health."

But, in February of 2017, Trump signed into law a bill that made it way easier to people struggling with mental health issues to get guns. An Obama-era rule allowed for more communication between agencies about mental health, so it would show up on background checks, but the bill Trump signed got rid of that legislation.

What’s more, the several new health care bills that Trump has pushed for have all taken coverage away from mental health issues — and an October executive order just made it harder to get health coverage in general.

On top of that, Trump’s proposed [2017] budget cuts over $600 billion from Health and Human Services and the latest GOP budget cuts over $1.4 trillion for Medicare and Medicaid, all of which make it harder for someone who needs mental health support to get it. So regardless of if it’s about guns or mental health, the president is doing nothing to fix either.
