State Senator Maureen Walsh in under fire for saying nurses “play cards” instead of working.
Walsh opposed a bill ensuring lunch breaks and rest for hospital nurses.
“I understand helping with employees and making sure that we have rest breaks and things like that but I also understand that we need to care for patients first and foremost,” she said. “I would submit to you those nurses probably do get breaks. They probably play cards for a considerable amount of the day.”
Nurses nationwide clapped back at Walsh on social media.
“Might need to finish our game of Uno before we attend to this…Senator Maureen Walsh…how did you even get elected?” Becky Bachelor Shook tweeted.
650,000 signed a petition daring Walsh to shadow nurses for a 12-hour shift.
Walsh has since commented on her statement, saying, “In the heat of a moment in the exhaustion of the session, I made a comment that I sincerely regret and I wished that I had phrased that a little bit more eloquently but unfortunately, I didn’t and Facebook scooped it up and ran with it,”
Walsh has agreed to shadow the nurses. After her comments, she said she was barraged by hateful messages.
