Anna Diop’s 'Titans' Starfire Backlash Goes Beyond Miscasting

The backlash behind Anna Diop’s Startfire character in the live action “Titans” series goes beyond miscasting. The actress allegedly disabled comments on all but one of her Instagram posts, due to the overwhelming backlash about her portrayal of DC heroine Starfire in the series’ latest trailer.

Her costume, wig, and supposed lack of resemblance to the character have all been scrutinized — and this isn’t the first time Diop has received hate regarding her casting. Earlier this year a photo of her on set was leaked on social media, to which she responded in a now-deleted Instagram post, “Too often social media is abused by some who find refuge in the anonymity and detachment it provides: misused as a tool to harass, abuse, and spew hatred at others… racist, derogatory, and/or cruel comments have nothing to do with the person on the receiving end […It] is always a reflection of themselves.”

Starfire debuted in the DC comic book universe in 1980 as an orange-skinned alien from the planet Tamaran. Throughout the years, she’s been depicted with various body shapes, skin tones, and hair textures. Plus there are only a few glimpses of Diop in the trailer, which are hardly enough to judge her character’s costume.

Friends and fans of the “Titans” star have also come to her defense.
