A character on “Arthur” came out as gay.
The season 22 premiere of PBS’ “Arthur” features a gay wedding, in which the children’s teacher Mr. Ratburn marries Patrick, the chocolate shop owner.
The episode follows Arthur and his friends as they try to stop Mr. Ratburn’s wedding because they think he’s getting married to a stranger named Patty, voiced by Jane Lynch. Arthur and his friends are later delighted to learn that Patty is Mr. Ratburn’s sister and that he is actually marrying Patrick.
Twitter was full of nostalgia after the season premiere on May 13.
“I think the biggest surprise about Mr. Ratburn from Arthur being gay is that I’m just now finding out that Arthur is still coming out with new episodes,” Erica Mendez stated on the platform.
The educational kids’ show has been on the air in the U.S. since 1996, and Mr. Ratburn is not the first LGBTQ+ character to appear in the show’s universe. A 2005 episode from the spin-off series “Postcards from Buster” features lesbian moms.
