Gigi Hadid shut down body shamers who called her “too skinny.” The model said her changing weight is due to a thyroid condition called Hashimotot’s Thyroiditis, which can cause fatigue, dry skin and weight gain. The 22-year-old had not yet been diagnosed when she started modeling at 17.
She stated on Twitter, “Over the last few years I’ve been properly medicated to help symptoms including those, as well as extreme fatigue, metabolism issues, body’s ability to retain heat, etc ... I was also part of a holistic medical trial that helped my thyroid levels balance out.”
Hadid called out critics who said she was “too big for the industry back then” and attributed her size to water retention and inflammation. She also stressed she isn’t happy about how thin she is now, but says she feels “healthy internally” and doesn’t plan on explaining the way her body looks anymore. She concluded her statement with a powerful call to action, stating “Please, as social media users and human beings in general, learn to have more empathy for others and know that you never really know the whole story. Use your energy to lift those that you admire rather than be cruel to those who don’t.”
