Jaden Smith’s foundation is bringing clean water to Flint.
Smith’s organization JUST Goods teamed up with The Last Kilometer and Firth Trinity Missionary Baptist Church to develop “The Water Box.”
The mobile filtration system removes pollutants, like lead, through a four-stage filter system and can provide 8-10 gallons of clean water per minute. The church has given out more than five million water bottles to Flint residents since the city’s water became tainted with lead in 2014.
More than 100,000 of the city’s residents have been exposed to contaminated water and 40% of the city lives below the poverty line. In April 2018, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder announced water quality was restored, but residents and health care professionals have disagreed on the water’s safety. The local, state, and federal government’s response to the crisis has been widely criticized.
The Water Box’s test results will be posted publicly as the church begins distributing water filtered by the new device.
