Michael Kelly of 'House of Cards' on Current Political Climate

“House of Cards’” Michael Kelly says watching Trump’s administration has made the show seem not so crazy anymore. He also can’t believe that a woman leading the country is still currently only a fictional concept.

“You had a woman run for president, the most qualified candidate to run in a very long time, and she wasn’t elected. I can’t wrap my head around it,” he said. “We’ve never been more divided as a country, and it’s awful to me.”

Kelly believes our country would “be a better place” if we had a three-party system. He also thinks the silver lining of Trump’s presidency is young Americans are better educated about important issues.

“I have a six-year-old and a nine-year-old and when I can’t let them watch the President of the United States speak, there’s something very wrong,” he stated. “My kids go to a public school, and they are educating these children on social issues now. I don’t know that if we had a Hillary Clinton in office that it would be the same. Would we be this aware?”

Kelly believes sometimes we need to take a step backward in order to take steps forward, and taking that step forward means not letting the relentless news cycle deter you from staying engaged.

“He’s a media manipulator, so we’re all getting tired. And I think that’s his game plan,” he said.
