Actor John Boyega wants Black kids to see themselves in his new movie “Pacific Rim Uprising.”
“There is a responsibly to make sure that young Black kids and Black people all over the world feel represented,” he stated.
The “Star Wars” actor remembers the 1st time he felt recognized on the big screen while watching a copy of “Coming to America.”
I saw Eddie Murphy in the movie — but not only Eddie Murphy, it was Eddie Murphy being like a fake-African,” he explained. “And to see somebody, you know, with really firm hair, you know, that doesn’t move in the wind, hair was fantastic.”
Boyega plays Jake Pentecost — an officer for the Pan Pacific Defense Corps in the 2nd installment of the “Pacific Rim” franchise. He’s also thrilled to be associated with the group of Black actors leading the charge to make a more diverse Hollywood.
“It’s incredible, I feel like — not to toot the horn of what’s going on —but let’s celebrate, regardless. I just feel like, you know, when we’re older, we’ll be able to look back and be like, wow. You know there, where was a group of people who were like, the first Avengers in this movement. And it’s a beautiful thing,” he stated.
