Tessa Thompson Says 'Get Out' Paved The Way For 'Sorry To Bother You'

The success of “Get Out” and “Moonlight” paved the way for “Sorry to Bother You.”

“There’s never been a lack of talent of inspiration, there’s just been a lack of opportunity and we’re in a space now where that is opening up,” actress Tessa Thompson explained. “I think everything’s happening right on time. It’s not that the artists haven’t been around. We’ve all been grinding and doing our thing forever.”

Director Boots Riley has been working on “Sorry To Bother You” for six years, but it’s understandable that people might compare the movie to other Black-made productions such as “Get Out” and “Atlanta.”

“So, if anything, I think, in terms of, like, if you say, like a ‘Get Out’ or an ‘Atlanta,’ which people will want to make comparisons what happens inside of a Hollywood space, unfortunately, is until something breaks through people don’t believe that the project can,” said Thompson. “So ‘Get Out’ does well and suddenly people go, like, ‘Oh, there’s a space for a film that wants to talk about racism.’ There’s an audience for that. And, by the way, it’s not just a Black audience and it’s not just an American audience; it’s a global audience.”
