Why Ava Duvernay's 'A Wrinkle In Time' Is So Important

Color of Change Executive Director Rashad Robinson explained the immense importance of “A Wrinkle in Time”

He stated, “With the recent success of movies like “Get Out,” “Girls Trip,” “Black Panther,” we are seeing an emergence of Black filmmakers, Black writers, Black talent being given the type of opportunity to showcase their work like never before. “A Wrinkle in Time” is such an important film for kids of color. It’s hard to imagine a world of possibilities, when you don’t see yourself reflected in the media. And that’s why “A Wrinkle in Time is so important.”

In 2018, we are seeing more representation on film but that has not always been the case. That’s why Color of Change is encouraging their members and the public to purchase and donate tickets so that kids can see themselves represented in a major motion picture.

“One of my favorite movies as a child was ‘The Goonies.’” Robinson explained. “My brother and I, we didn’t really see anyone in that movie that looked like us. In fact, many of the movies that were marketed to young people as I was growing up didn’t have characters that looked like us.”
