15-Year-Old Cori Gauff Beats 'Idol' Venus Williams at Wimbeldon

15-Year-Old Cori Gauff defeated her idol Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon.
The American player became the youngest player to win the first round of ladies singles since 1991 after defeating five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams.
“I never thought this would happen. I’m literally living my dream right now,” she stated. “Not many people get to say that. So, I’m just happy that Wimbledon gave me the opportunity just to play and I obviously never thought that it would be this far.”
Gauff says Williams inspired her to pursue tennis in the first place.
“[Venus Williams] just told me that, congratulations and to keep going, and good luck,” she explained. “After the match I told her that, just thank you for everything she did. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her. And I was just telling her that she is so inspiring. I always wanted to tell her that and even though I met her before, I guess now I had the guts to.”
