This group of athletes will definitely get you into curling — the “Garlic Girls” are totally taking over the Olympic games. The South Korean women’s curling team has been making its country proud by ranking #1 for women’s Olympic curling at the 2018 games. What’s more — it’s only the country’s second Olympics sending a women’s curling team.
Coach Peter Gallant stated, “The people who don’t follow curling as closely maybe are surprised by us. But I think if you ask any of the other skips, they know who we are, and they know we’re a tough team to beat.”
The team is nicknamed “Garlic Girls” because they all come from a garlic-producing town in South Korea. It’s the same town that opened Korea’s first curling club in 2006. The women have been practicing there since high school and two of them, Kim Kyeong-Ae and Kim Yeong-Mi are sisters. Now, their region’s high school hosts viewing parties to watch the women compete at the games and smash the competition at is year’s Olympics.
“They’re inspiring a lot of young kids to participate in winter sports, and not just curling. I skip dinner whenever they’re playing. My focus needs to be on the match.” Do Ki-Min, a local fan, stated.
