Sustainable fashion is slowly but surely becoming more mainstream. What was once associated with “hippy fashion” has now flourished into an entire industry filled with cute and fashionable wares. Though the movement started with lesser known brands, better-known names are starting to get on the sustainable bandwagon and realizing they are good for sales as well as the planet. Big names like Stella McCartney, H&M, and Michael Kors have all recently made pledges to make more ethical fashion. And the newest fashion giant to join them is everyone’s favorite name in shoes; Adidas.
Adidas recently sold 1 million pairs of shoes made out of ocean plastic, according to a CNBC interview with the company’s CEO. Last year Adidas teamed up with Parley for the Oceans, a group that raises awareness about the issues facing out oceans and how we can make a difference.
The collaboration gave us three new versions of the UltraBoost shoe, all of which are made from ocean plastic. Each pair of shoes is made out of 11 plastic bottles.
Adidas saw shares drop 15% over the past 6 months and its 4th quarter sales were lower than expected. But the company says it expects 2018 to be another year of sale and profit growth.
