Cancer left champion boxer Daniel Jacobs paralyzed, but he fought his way back to do something unimaginable.
“I was overseas actually on the USO tour for the troops and I realized that I was very weak. And upon my return it was very hard for me to walk. And I realized when I went to the doctor that it was a massive tumor growing in my spine,” he explained. “You know, we knew we had to get something done.”
The tumor left Jacobs paralyzed and he was told he would never walk again. Before cancer, he was reigning North American middleweight champion.
“Boxing is one of those sports where anything can happen. And in my life, the worst to me has already happened,” he said. “I’ve always said, once I got out of the hospital, I’m going to give it one more shot.”
The push to get back in the ring kept him in the fight and, in October 2012, he made his miraculous return to the ring. In August 2014, he was crowned World Middleweight Champion.
He has since used his experience to give back with his foundation Get in The Ring and says that his recovery has helped give him an edge in the ring.
