NBA Coach Greg Popovich of San Antonio Spurs on Why We Need Black History Month

This NBS coach perfectly sums up why we need Black History Month.

“I think it’s pretty obvious why [Black History Month is important.]" San Antonio Spurs Coach Greg Popovich stated to KTVX. “The league is made up of a lot of Black guys, you know, so to honor that and understand it is pretty simplistic. How would you ignore that? But more importantly, we live in a racist country that hasn’t figured it out yet. And it’s always important to bring attention to it, even if it angers some people. The point is you have to keep it in front of everybody’s nose to understand it still hasn’t been taken care of and we have a lot of work to do.”

Black History Month serves to highlight the achievements and the ancestry and progress of black people. Some may think this is unnecessary, but it couldn’t be further from the opposite, considering how much the strife and achievements of Black people have been obscured throughout history. As Popovich stated,  there are parts of the country who still uphold racist ideals, which is why it is completely necessary to lift up the Black community, and celebrate their past, as well as their future.
