Imagine if one of the biggest pop stars burned down the house of one of the NFL’s biggest stars. Well, an incident like this actually did occur 25 years ago when Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes set fire to Andre Rison’s home.
Risen was one of the NFL’s best wide receivers and a Super Bowl champion. He was also dating Lopes, who was a member of the iconic girl group TLC. They were definitely one of the most popular couples of the '90s, but despite their combined success, their relationship was swarming with anger and violence. In 1993, both were arrested over a domestic dispute outside of an Atlanta nightclub. They stayed together despite the incident — but on June 9th, 1994, their hostilities were taken to a new level.
The two reportedly started to fight early in the morning after Rison returned from a club. Both claimed that the other escalated the fight to blows, then Risen took a walk to cool down. While he was gone, Lopes gathered a pile of expensive sneakers he’d recently purchased, thrown them in the bath tub and set them on fire. She was unable to contain the flames and the entire mansion was burned down.
A day later, she was arrested and charged with arson, but was able to lesson her punishment to probation and a fine. The couple miraculously were able to stay together despite the spectacle, but Lopes was tragically killed in a car accident in 2002. The incident has largely faded out of the spotlight, but, back in 1994, there was no bigger story in the sports or entertainment world.
