Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics are Speaking Out about Stephon Clark

NBA teams united to demand that police be held accountable after two officers killed an unarmed Black man named Stephon Clark.

The Kings and Celtics posted a video to their social feeds, stating, “These tragedies have to stop. There must be accountability. Black, white, Brown, we are one. We are one. We will not stick to sports. We will not shut up and dribble. This is bigger than basketball. Change can be uncomfortable. Change is necessary. We need to talk. We need to act. We matter. We must unite. Say his name. Stephon Clark. We must unite.”

Clark was unarmed when police fired 20 shots at him in his grandparents’ backyard, upon investigating reports about a man breaking car windows. He was holding only an iPhone and died on the scene after being shot. Police say the event is still under investigation.

The kings also wore the message in their warm-up, following the protests that erupted in Sacramento, disrupting their game against the Atlanta Hawks. Before the game, the Kings’ owner addressed the crowd, stating, “And we stand here before you, all young, Black, white, Brown. And we are all united in our commitment. We recognize that it’s not just business as usual. And we are going to work really hard to bring everybody together to make the world a better place, starting with our own community.”
