Many parents sacrifice so much in order for their children to become Olympic athletes. But these particular parents are, quite literally, going the extra mile in order to witness their son achieve Olympic success in South Korea. The two biked 10,000 miles to see their son at the Olympics. Guido Huwiler and Rita Ruttiman traveled for over a year, through 20 different countries, to get to Korea in time to see skier Mischa Gasser compete. Gasser is a Swiss skier specializing in aerials. Guido is his dad and Rita is his stepmom.
Guido left his job as an architect in order to make the journey. The trip was extremely difficult for the older couple — while passing through Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, they pedaled three miles about sea level. But they would do it all over again to see Mischa compete.
And Guido had advice for his son on the eve of his events, stating, “Mischa, do you best you can in your life, just live your dream and don’t listen to anybody who tells you some stories about what you have to do, how you should be good, how you should be bad, whatever you do, go only for your dream.”
