USWNT Co-Captain Megan Rapinoe on Activism and Advocacy

Soccer star Megan Rapinoe says it’s her “personal responsibility” to advocate for causes and people she believes in.

“I feel very strongly about every single person being given the opportunity to be the best person that they can be and to have every opportunity that they could ever want,” she said.

The co-captain of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team reportedly didn’t sing the National Anthem with her team before their first World Cup match against Thailand on June 11. In a March 2019 interview with NowThis, Rapinoe said she’s lucky to have the platform that she has.

“You know, to be on this team and be as successful as we’ve been has put us in this incredible place and I just feel like, I would just be selfish not to use it in the way that I have and I think just seeing how impactful what I’ve said and what other teammates have said, of mine, it actually does change things, like we’ve moved the needle on so many things just ebbing willing to speak up,” she said. “And I just feel like, I’m selfish if I’m not even willing to just stand up and say something when other people are, you know, either risking their lives of their jobs, or whatever to do it.”
